Diaspora in Canada

We noticed a number of visitors from Canada so here's some information about the languages known to be spoken there, and where you can find Bibles and other resources.

English and French are the national languages, there are probably in excess of 500 languages used at home (and elsewhere) by people currently living in Canada.

The Canadian Bible Society provides print Bibles in over 70 languages.

Find.Bible currently includes 257 languages for Canada including, indigenous, established, and unestablished migrant languages. It links to digitally available scripture in over 200 of these.

Non-Official Languages Spoken at Home in Canada, 2021

After English and French, the next most widely used languages are Arabic, Tagalog, Russian, Hindi, Punjabi, Urdu, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish Mandarin and Yue (Cantonese).

It is worth noting that while that while Modern Standard Arabic is the standard written for of Arabic, spoken Arabic differs from one country to the next and there are at least 12 varieties identified by Ethnologue as being used in Canada.

The 2021 Census included 538 categories for "Mother tongue by single and multiple mother tongue responses". These included details for at least 408 individual languages, plus categories of languages “not included elsewhere”, within specific language families that could account for another 50 to 150 languages.

The reports aren't specifically easy to navigate but the census tool at allows you to select individual languages (or several) and get detailed reports of where they are spoken.

Note: We plan to update this page with more information in the coming months.
